Volkswagen Microbus to go electric!

It is rumoured that the classic camper-van will return with an all-electric derivative at the Consumer Electronics Show

Set for 2017 production at Volkswagen's Puebla factory in Mexico, the concept car will showcase the newly developed electric system as well as other contemporary connectivity technologies.

The zero local emission driveline, which relies on the Volkswagen Group’s latest lithium-ion battery technology as used by the Audi R8 E-Tron and Audi Q6 E-Tron Quattro concept, is claimed to provide a range of between 400 and 500km (250-310 miles) depending on the driving conditions.

The all-electric Microbus is planned to be offered alongside more conventional turbocharged four-cylinder petrol and diesel powerplants on the production Microbus, which senior Wolfsburg sources describe as being smaller than the latest Multivan.

Above, the 'Bulli' concept Microbus, which was shown at the 2011 Geneva Motorshow. The new concept could have a similar design.

Speaking at the New York show earlier this year, a Volkswagen spokesman revealed that VW engineers and designers were working on a new Camper van concept using a small electric motor driving the front wheels and battery packs stored under the floor.

The spokesman told Autocar that the design of the original VW van was "so iconic" that any attempt at a new model would have to have three "very important" design cues: "First the wide, solid, D-pillar, second the boxy design of the centre section and, thirdly, the front end must have a very short overhang. The distance from the A-pillar to the front end must be very short."

The key to achieving the unique front-end design is the fact that an electric motor would allow a much lower 'bonnet line' than a conventional petrol engine. This, in turn, would allow the A-pillars to be placed much further forward than in a conventional MPV.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport

Find everything you need to know about the new Volkswagen Golf GTi Clubsport right here!

The Gof GTi Clubsport is a limited edition design and more focused than ever, making it the fastest GTI there's ever been. It is planned to reach the UK in limited numbers in 2016 and has the distinction of it being their fastest GTi model to date!

The Clubsport is differentiated from the existing seventh-generation GTi models by a series of styling upgrades. Included is a unique front bumper featuring a large central air duct with a honeycomb insert, additional trapezoidal ducts used to cool the front brakes, high-gloss black blades low down on the outer edges for added downforce, so-called air curtains to smooth airflow around the edges and a splitter element down low.

The upgrades up front are accompanied by high-gloss black door mirror housings and a black graphic along the lower edge of the doors in homage to the look of the original 1976 Golf GTi.

At the rear, Volkswagen’s design team has provided the new car with a new twin-vane spoiler mounted atop the tailgate, together with vertical vanes along the outer edges of the rear window, a heavily restyled bumper with an integrated diffuser and larger-diameter chromed tailpipes.

The Golf GTi Clubsport is powered by a reworked version of the Volkswagen Group’s turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder EA888 petrol engine, as used by existing versions of the Golf GTi. But while the standard Golf GTi gets 217bhp, or 227bhp in Performance guise, the Clubsport offers up 261bhp between 5350 and 6600rpm.

That’s not the end of the story, though. An overboost function temporarily raises turbocharger boost pressure from 1.9bar to 2.1bar for up to 10 seconds on kickdown, increasing overall power output to 287bhp – albeit only for a maximum 10 seconds. That's just 8bhp less than the Golf R.
