Car raises thousands for NSPCC at auction

Children from a Newcastle primary school have helped raise thousands of pounds for the NSPCC by decorating a car for a charity auction.
Hania and Nyah from St Catherine’s RC School in Newcastle were winners in an artwork competition organised by motor retailer Pulman to celebrate 25 years of the NSPCC’s ChildLine service.

The pair had their designs displayed on a Volkswagen Fox, which was donated to the NSPCC Grand Ball auction by Pulman, raising an impressive £7,000 for the charity.

As well as having their designs displayed on the car, Hania, from year 5, won tickets to a Newcastle United match for four people. Nyah, from year 3, won a signed Newcastle United replica shirt and a football signed by Alan Shearer.

Pulman Marketing Manager Natalie Wilson said: “We wanted to donate the car as an auction prize and we thought it would be great to involve local children at St Catherine’s to make the car extra special. We had some great entries in the drawing competition and Hania and Nyah both did a fantastic job. There was a lot of interest in the car at the Ball and everyone commented on the brilliant pictures.”

St Catherine’s Head Teacher Michael Ewing said: "Children at St Catherine's are familiar with the work of NSPCC, particularly through the Childline service. Many families have supported their fundraising activities over the recent past, so we were very happy to involve the children in designing the NSPCC logo for the car.

“Both Hania and Nyah were delighted when they heard the news that their entries had won and they couldn't stop smiling when they saw that their designs had been reproduced on the car. We were so pleased to support this NSPCC project as the work they do helps to improve lives for vulnerable families in the North East."

Pulman are long standing supporters of the NSPCC and co-sponsored the Grand Ball, alongside Newcastle International Airport.

Pulman have Volkswagen and SEAT retailers across the North East, and for the past 10 years have raised over £200,000 for the NSPCC. Natalie continued: “We are very passionate about giving and helping our local community, and are very proud to support the NSPCC.”

NSPCC head of local fundraising for the North East, Wendy Bates said: “Well done to Hania and Nyah.  Their wonderful designs made the car totally unique.  I’m sure that’s what led to the increased interest in the car at auction and helped to raise such a fantastic amount. Thanks also to Pulman for donating the car. They have supported the NSPCC for a number of years, raising thousands of pounds to help local vulnerable children and their families. It’s thanks to corporate sponsors like Pulman, as well as ongoing support from the public, that the NSPCC can continue to provide services to help vulnerable children and their families.”

Anyone who would like to find out more about supporting the NSPCC can visit www.nspcc.org.uk or call the North East fundraising team on 0191 227 5300.

Let it Snow, let it snow, let is snow…be prepared with Winter Tyres

With Pulman be prepared for the snow this winter! Pulman have launched their brand new service ‘Hotel4Tyres’, which in short supplies, fits and stores winter tyres for you.

We have all experienced the recent harsh winters, and as much as we hope that the snow will stay away this year, the likelihood is that we will be facing the same cold and freezing winter.

Pulman believe in delivering a fantastic customer experience, which is why they have produced a winter tyre and service programme to help keep customers safe and prepared for winter.

Calling it ‘Hotel4Tyres’, Pulman are offering winter tyres at not only fantastic rates, but a fully comprehensive service, all included. As well as supplying a wide range of winter tyres with or without wheels, Hotel4Tyres will store and fit the winter tyres for you. As well as storing and re-fitting your summer tyres. They will even store your winter tyres again ready for next year. So you don’t have to worry or organise a thing!

“We believe in delivering a fantastic customer experience and the Pulman ‘Hotel for Tyres’ does just that. We are helping our customers to prepare for winter! Winter Tyres are a fantastic solution to help people drive in snow and icy conditions. Our ‘hotel for tyres’ service ensures that our customers are ready for winter without the hassle of storing, fitting or re-fitting their tyres. We take care of that for them.” (Paul Collins, Parts Manager)

Winter tyres are specially made to give you more grip on icy, wet or snowy roads. Paul Collins continues, “Winter tyres sometimes have the misunderstanding of just been used on snowy roads, however as soon as the temperature drops below 7⁰C winter tyres will start to perform better and more efficiently than summer tyres.

A winter tyre is made with a higher natural rubber content that keeps tyres soft and flexible even in colder weather conditions. By switching to winter tyres you are not only ensuring your safety when driving, but pro-longing the life of both winter and summer tyres.”

Visit www.Hotel4Tyres.co.uk to find out more about winter tyres, winter driving tips and how to get prepared for winter. Supply, fit and store winter tyres in one complete package.

The first photos of the Volkswagen up!

The first photos of the Volkswagen up! have been released, ahead of the new small car making its debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September.
The up! is an entirely new design, offering maximum space on a minimal footprint (3.54 x 1.64 m), making it ideal for driving in the world’s cities. It will be launched in Europe in December.

There are three versions for different budgets and needs: take up! is the entry-level car, move up! the comfort-oriented model and high up! the top version.  At the car’s market launch, there will also be two models based on the high up!: up! black and up! white.

Making its debut in the up! is a new generation of three-cylinder petrol engines, with outputs of 60 PS and 75 PS.  Combined fuel consumption as a BlueMotion Technology version (including a Stop/Start system) is 4.2 l/100 km (60 PS), and CO2 emissions for this version are less than 100 g/km. There are also plans for an up! with electric drive.

An important new safety technology in the up! is the optional City Emergency Braking system. It is automatically active at speeds under 18 mph, and uses a laser sensor to detect the risk of an impending collision. Depending on speed and situation, City Emergency Braking can reduce accident severity by initiating automatic brake interventions that can even avoid a crash. So far, the up! is the only vehicle in the segment to be offered with this function.

At 3.54 metres in length and 1.64 metres in width and 1.48 metres in height, the up! is one of the smallest four-seater cars. Its overall length consists of short body overhangs and a long wheelbase of 2.42 metres. Use of space in the car is exceptionally good, because of the wheelbase, which is one of the longest in the segment, combined with an engine that is mounted well forward. The 251-litre boot is also significantly larger than is typical in this class. When the rear seat is fully folded, cargo space is increased to 951 litres.
The interior is as colourful as it is capacious, with either decor paint or body colour (depending on the equipment line) used in the interior, including across the dashboard facia. The clean and well-organised layout of the interior of the up! also offers clever details, fun styling and a level of quality that will enhance the market segment.
For the first time in a Volkswagen, the maps + more system is now being offered, which is a mobile Personal Infotainment Device (PID).  In the economically priced up!, this is an equally economical system that was developed to organise navigation, telephone, information and entertainment, and was designed in cooperation with Navigon, one of the world’s leading suppliers of navigation systems.

The user simply snaps the PID into place above the centre console.  Unlike many other similar systems of this type, maps + more melds with the car’s network of systems more effectively: navigation, telephone and infotainment can be controlled and viewed via the maps + more touchscreen, which can also be used to view vehicle information, such as the display of the parking sensors (where fitted).  Apps specially developed for the up! also let users extend maps + more to meet their specific needs.
The new Volkswagen Up! Are you excited...

Sunderland fan wins two SAFC season tickets.

Darren Besnen was the lucky winner of one adult and one Junior SAFC season ticket courtesy of Pulman.

Pulman are a Volkswagen and SEAT dealership across Sunderland and Durham. During the Sunderland Airshow which took place on 30th and 31st July, Pulman handed out over 3000 scratch cards in which everyone was a winner, from a free car wash and vacuum to an extra £500 towards the next car purchase. But the main prize was the adult and junior SAFC season ticket.

Darren Besnen the lucky winner from Seaham, a local paediatrician, grew up as a huge Sunderland supporter, in which now his 3 children – Luke, Adam and Louise, are also now fans of SAFC.

Darren comments: “I can’t believe it, I’ve never won anything before, I literally ran to the Pulman stand at the airshow to claim the prize. It was a very lucky ticket! I have 3 children and when the lady was handing out the scratch cards, she initially gave us 2 tickets for Luke and Louise. I asked for an extra ticket for my son Adam and that was the winning ticket, unbelievable!

We’re all massive Sunderland fans and I always wanted to take the kids to watch the game. Winning these season tickets is absolutely fantastic, I just want to thank Pulman!

We visited Pulman’s SEAT dealership in Sunderland to collect the tickets, unfortunately for us we are going on holiday and will miss the first game of the season against Newcastle, although my twin brother has already claimed the first game for himself! I guess the only issue I have now is deciding who I will take to each game!”

Natalie Wilson, Marketing Manager for Pulman comments, “When Darren came with the winning ticket it was absolutely fantastic! We are so pleased that a huge SAFC fan who is local to the area has won the tickets. With having 2 dealerships in Sunderland alone, we are very proud to be apart of the local community and always like to give something back, which is where the scratch card idea came from, so everyone wins a prize. We hope Darren and his family enjoy the season.”

Charity is the winner at Par-fect fundraiser

An annual golf event in Chester-le-Street has raised over £22,000 for charities in the region.
The NSPCC and Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital will each benefit from the event, which was organised by leading Volkswagen & SEAT retailer Pulman.
The retailer, which has showrooms in County Durham and Sunderland, has organised the golf event for the past six years, raising over £75,000 since 2006.
This year’s event saw 84 enthusiastic amateur golfers, including special guest Sir Ian Botham, take to the course to enjoy 18 holes of golf and a three course meal.
Guests were then encouraged to bid for items in an auction featuring exclusive sporting prizes including a football boot signed by Lionel Messi, 1966 World Cup memorabilia, and a private box at St James’ Park for the Newcastle v Manchester United game.
The event is the creation of Managing Director and keen golfer Mike Pulman. He said:
“This has been the best golf day yet. Every year we raise more and more for charity and this year we topped the lot. I’m really pleased that we’re able to make a contribution that will help people across the region.”
This year the event on 27 June raised £22,250. This will be split in half, with 50% going to the Freeman Hospital and 50% going towards the new NSPCC centre in Newcastle that offers services to help some of the most vulnerable children and young people in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and County Durham.
Wendy Bates, head of local fundraising for the NSPCC in the North East said:
“I’d like to thank Mike and his team at Pulman for putting in such a tremendous amount of effort to once again organise a fantastic golf day. It’s thanks to supporters like Pulman that we are able to fund our services for children in the region. Everyone involved in the day, whether paying to enter, bidding in the auction or helping with the planning, has made a real difference to the lives of children in the North East.”
Money donated to the Freeman Hospital will help improve patient comfort and enhance the hospital’s facilities for both patients and staff.
Dr Janet McComb from The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said:
“We rely on charitable donations from trusts, individuals and companies, like Pulman to supplement mainstream NHS funding. Thanks to everyone involved in the golf day, the money raised will help to pay for staff training, specialist services, staff and patient amenities, improvements to the hospital environment and pioneering research which means that our patients can often benefit from groundbreaking treatment.”

The roof

Golf is one of the quietest cabriolets you can buy because its fabric roof and new window and door seals were designed to keep out the most intrusive noise.

Volkswagen's engineers examined wind noise in the high frequency range, above 5,000 Hz, which make it difficult to hold a conversation while driving (using a measure of human hearing called the articulation index), and evaluated experiences in other vehicles.

The soft-top is joined to the roof bows by screw-fastened fabric retention strips: this has a positive effect on aerodynamics and, combined with the insulation and door and window seals, dramatically reduces wind noise when the top is up.

The fully automatic electrohydraulic top is operated from a switch on the centre console. It opens in just 9.5 seconds and closes in 11.7 seconds. Opening and closing are even possible while driving at speeds up to 18 miles per hour.

The Golf Cabriolet’s soft-top is secured by a fully automatic electromechanical locking system – no manual unlatching or latching is necessary.

The system senses, via two microswitches, when the roof is completely opened or closed, and alerts the driver that opening/closing is complete with an acoustic signal and a visual message in the multifunction display. The front part of the roof covers its storage space when it is stowed, eliminating the need for a separate cover. The 250-litre boot space is not compromised at all when the roof is down.

Safety and body structure

The body of the Golf Cabriolet offers all-round safety thanks to its extremely fast rollover protection system, which deploys in milliseconds, reinforced windscreen frame and numerous modifications to the underbody, side panels, sills, back panel and doors.

These reinforcements also give the Golf Cabriolet extreme torsional rigidity, which gives the car optimal driving stability and comfort for the driver.

SEAT’S RACE WINNER SET FOR GATESHEAD APPEARANCE

A group of students from Gateshead College are aiming to recreate SEAT’s legendary World Touring Car Championship-winning car after being given an example of the road-going model on which it was based.

Motorsport students at Gateshead College’s
Skills Academy with the road-going car
they will attempt to transform into a replica
of SEAT’s legendary WTCC winner.

The SEAT Leon TDI was donated to the Skills Academy for Automotive, Engineering, Manufacturing and Logistics at Team Valley by the sporty Spanish car maker and its Sunderland retail partner, Pulman SEAT, as part of an initiative to develop young automotive talent.

Now students enrolled on the BTEC National Award/Diploma in Motorsport course will attempt to transform the stylish and poised hatchback – a firm favourite with families – into a working replica of the race car that powered SEAT to back-to-back WTCC Manufacturer titles in 2008 and 2009 and won the Drivers’ title for both Gabriele Tarquini and Yvan Muller.

Meanwhile, bodyshop students will beef-up the road-going
Leon’s looks as their paintshop counterparts recreate the WTCC Leon’s striking yellow and green livery.

And, if all goes well, the college team hopes they may be able to enter the finished car in competitive touring car races with the help of their partners from professional team Tornado Motorsport.

Kevin Marston, Head of Automotive at Gateshead College said: ‘Our courses aim to give our students a direct route into Motorsport and most of them come here because they have a real passion for racing.

‘Transforming this Leon into a replica of the famous WTCC-winning car will be a major project that will keep the students busy for quite some time.  And it will be fantastic for them to work towards recreating such a modern racing car and one which was so successful.

‘We’re incredibly grateful to SEAT UK and Pulman SEAT for this donation.  Hopefully, this will be the start of a successful partnership.’

Natalie Wilson, Marketing Manager, and Emma Brydon,
Graduate Trainee, handing over the SEAT Leon on behalf
of Pulman.
Natalie Wilson, Marketing Manager at Pulman SEAT, said: ‘SEAT had a number of fully-functional cars which couldn’t be registered for the roads for a variety of reasons and decided that, rather than recycling them, it would be far better to offer them to colleges and training providers that could make good use of them.

‘When they approached us and asked us if we could find a worthy recipient in the North East, the Gateshead College Automotive Academy immediately sprang to mind as we were well aware of the fantastic work they do here.

‘Hopefully, this donation will help the students on to fantastic futures in the automotive trade and motorsport, and help the college continue to develop the undoubted potential that exists in this region.’

Soccer AM PM AM Smash World Record

In the words of their physiotherapist there was no way they should have been able to do what they did. But that didn’t stop the Soccer AM PM AM team smashing the Guinness World Record for the longest football game played.

After the organiser, Paul Newton, lost his father last year to Wegeners Granulomatosis, the team played in aid of raising awareness and money for the cause.

With a Previous Record of 36 hours the Soccer AM PM AM lads smashed the record by 4 hours. After 6 months of a rigorous training programme the game lasted for 40 hours with a grand total of 1,250 goals scored. The initial £5,000 target was blown away with over £7,500 raised by the time the game started on Friday and is still climbing.

Paul Newton said about the day; “We will all take away memories that will last forever and it was an amazing way to honour my dad’s life”

“I was overcome with emotion toward the end and it was all due to the thought of how many people had been so generous with their time, effort, cash and commitment.”

Not only did the team gain amazing support from the public but also from the local football club, Newcastle United.

Newcastle’s first team coach John Carver and Number One Keeper Steve Harper joined the Soccer AM PM AM team giving them some last minute advise and support. Even though football alliances may have lay elsewhere in the region the two made the day truly special for the team.

As sponsors of the team Pulman supplied the Soccer AM PM AM lads with their ‘Powered by Pulman’ training kits and official match strips.

Paul Newton commented “Without Pulman we couldn’t have done what we did and all thank you from the bottom of our hearts”

With less than £2,000 to make the new £10,000 target set, you can still donate money to the cause at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/SoccerAM...PM....AM
